How Persistent Multipliers Differ from Random Multipliers

A multiplier can appear for one moment, grow after every cascade or remain attached to a grid position for an entire bonus. These versions may share the same “up to 100x” headline, yet they create very different games. When I assess multiplier mechanics, persistence matters at least as much as the maximum printed value.

What is a random multiplier?

A random multiplier receives a value when it lands or when a feature selects it. Unless the rules say otherwise, it applies only to the current win or current tumble sequence and then disappears.

Sweet Bonanza provides the familiar example. Multiplier bombs can land during free spins with individual values from 2x to 100x. They do not automatically pay by appearing. Persistence is not the same as a guarantee

A sticky 64x position can look valuable while contributing nothing if no later win uses that square. A global multiplier can climb steadily while the remaining spins produce no qualifying combinations. Persistence creates additional future opportunities; it does not force the random number generator to supply a matching result.

Four questions that reveal the real mechanic

  1. Where does it live? Is it global, attached to a symbol or tied to one position?
  2. When does it reset? After the win, after the paid spin, between free spins or only when the bonus ends?
  3. How does it grow? Addition, doubling, a random upgrade or one step per cascade produce different progressions.
  4. Which win does it modify? Every win, one symbol, one cluster or only combinations touching the marked cell?

Those details are more informative than comparing “100x” with “128x”. The lower-looking feature may apply more often or remain active much longer.

Can a slot use both systems?

Yes. A game can place random starting multipliers onto the board and then allow them to persist or grow. It can also combine a persistent global multiplier with temporary symbol multipliers. In that situation, the rules must explain whether the values add together, multiply one another or apply in a particular order.
