How Slot RTP Is Split Between Base Game and Bonuses
A slot’s overall RTP can be divided between ordinary play, free spins, jackpots and other features. That split explains why two games with the same headline RTP can feel radically different. It also prevents a common mistake: reading “bonus contribution 26.90%” as though the bonus itself returned only 26.90% once triggered.
Overall RTP is the sum of expected contributions
Each possible event has a probability and an award. The mathematical contribution of an event is its probability multiplied by its average payout. When the contributions from every base-game and feature outcome are added, they produce the theoretical RTP.
A simplified model might allocate:
- 70 percentage points to ordinary wins;
- 25 percentage points to free-spins outcomes;
- 1 percentage point to a jackpot;
- 96 percentage points in total.
Those figures describe how much each component contributes across all wagers. They do not describe the conditional return after a player has already entered the feature.
Candy Bonanza provides a transparent example
PG Soft’s published information for Candy Bonanza lists an overall RTP of 96.72%. It attributes 69.82 percentage points to the main game and 26.90 points to the free-spins feature. Together they equal the stated overall return.

The 26.90% figure does not mean that A$100 wagered after entering free spins returns A$26.90. It already includes how rarely the feature begins and the distribution of awards inside it.
Feature-heavy games feel more volatile
If a large share of RTP sits in a relatively rare bonus, ordinary spins must contribute less of the total return. The balance may decline for an extended period while the player waits for the feature that carries much of the game’s value.
Sweet Bonanza illustrates this perception well. The base game can create multiple tumbles, but the multiplier bombs that define its largest outcomes are active during free spins. The headline RTP alone does not reveal how heavily the return depends on reaching and performing well in that round.
I consider RTP allocation one of the most useful but least frequently published statistics. It explains experience better than a generic “high volatility” label, although it still cannot predict the next session.
Trigger frequency and bonus contribution are different
A feature can trigger relatively often and still contribute a modest share of RTP if its average award is small. Another feature may trigger rarely but account for a large contribution because its average and upper-tail awards are much larger.
The relationship can be expressed conceptually as:
Feature contribution = trigger probability × average feature award
The actual model may include retriggers, direct triggers, bonus buys and several entry states, but the principle remains the same.
Bonus Buy needs its own RTP figure
Purchasing a feature skips the natural trigger process and places a much larger wager on one feature entry. The theoretical return for that purchase may be slightly higher, lower or identical to standard play.
I record Bonus Buy RTP separately because it is a play mode, not automatically another operator-selected version. A slot can therefore have:
- one overall RTP for ordinary play;
- a different RTP when an Ante Bet is active;
- another RTP for a purchased feature;
- separate whole-game builds selected by the casino.
Combining those numbers into one high-to-low range can misrepresent what the operator has changed.
Progressive jackpots complicate the split
A progressive slot may divert part of each qualifying stake into a jackpot pool. The displayed RTP can include a fixed-game component and a variable jackpot component calculated at a particular jackpot value.
The rules should explain whether the published RTP includes the progressive contribution and whether eligibility changes with stake. A game with a large headline jackpot is not necessarily returning more through ordinary line or cluster wins.
Why identical overall RTP can hide different experiences

Model A would generally return more of its value outside the bonus. Model B would depend more heavily on feature outcomes. Their long-run RTP is equal, but their likely session paths are not.
What I look for in a review
- Overall RTP and every available whole-game configuration.
- Base-game and feature contributions, if the provider publishes them.
- Bonus trigger probability and average feature award.
- Separate RTP figures for Ante Bet and Bonus Buy.
- Any jackpot contribution included in the return.
- The maximum-win cap and whether reaching it ends unused features.
