Maximum Win vs Maximum-Win Probability
Maximum win tells us the largest award a slot permits. Maximum-win probability tells us how often the mathematical model is expected to reach it. Publishing the first number without the second creates an impressive headline but an incomplete description of risk.
A maximum win is a ceiling
If a game advertises a 25,000x maximum win, an A$0.20 stake can theoretically produce a maximum award of A$5,000, subject to the game rules and any operator-level monetary cap. The multiplier does not state how likely that event is.
Sweet Bonanza 1000 has a published maximum win of 25,000x. The feature also contains multiplier bombs worth up to 1,000x, but a 1,000x bomb is not itself the maximum win. It still needs an eligible tumble win, and the completed award remains subject to the 25,000x cap.
Hit rate is not maximum-win probability
Bonanza Megaways is published with a hit frequency of 37.94% and a maximum payout of 26,000x. The hit-frequency number covers the developer’s defined winning events; it does not mean that 37.94% of spins have any meaningful chance of reaching the maximum.
The same distinction applies to Bonanza Falls, for which Big Time Gaming publishes a 39.70% hit frequency and a 93,540x maximum payout. One figure concerns the frequency of wins generally, while the other states the upper limit.

RTP does not reveal the maximum-win odds
Two games can both return 96% theoretically while allocating their extreme outcomes differently. One may place a tiny portion of RTP in a very rare 50,000x event. Another may cap wins at 5,000x and distribute more value through smaller prizes.
The RTP is the sum of every outcome’s probability multiplied by its award. Without the rest of that distribution, the probability of one particular outcome cannot be reconstructed from the total.
Advertised, theoretical and simulated maxima
Provider documents sometimes distinguish between:
- Advertised maximum: the cap promoted for the game.
- Theoretical maximum: the largest result permitted by the mathematical rules.
- Maximum exposure: the largest result found or modelled under a specified testing method.
- Observed maximum: the largest award appearing in a finite simulation or live dataset.
These values should not be silently substituted for one another. PG Soft’s information for Candy Bonanza, for instance, separately reports an advertised 50,000x maximum and a much smaller maximum exposure observed in a one-billion-spin simulation. A finite simulation not observing the advertised cap does not prove that the cap is impossible; it shows how rare the upper tail may be under that sample.
How repeated spins affect a rare-event probability
If the probability of the maximum on one independent spin is p, the probability of seeing it at least once in n spins is:
1 − (1 − p)n
This formula does not make the maximum “due”. It calculates the cumulative chance across a chosen number of independent trials. After a long losing sequence, the probability on the next spin remains governed by the same model unless the game rules explicitly describe a persistent feature state.
Maximum win can terminate a feature
Many modern slots stop the round once the win cap is reached. Remaining free spins, cascades or modifiers may be forfeited under the rules. This is relevant when several multipliers appear capable of pushing the visible calculation beyond the advertised maximum.
I list this termination rule because “up to 25,000x” can mean both a target and a hard ceiling. No combination is paid above that amount simply because the animation could have continued.
My assessment standard
I do not describe a maximum win as attainable in any practical sense unless its probability is published or can be supported by reliable mathematical documentation. “Possible under the rules” and “likely enough to influence a normal session” are entirely different claims.
For each title in the Bonanza catalogue, I would prefer to show:
- maximum win in stake multiples;
- the exact rule that creates or caps it;
- maximum-win probability, when published;
- the provider’s simulation size, when the figure comes from simulation;
- whether the feature ends immediately at the cap.
A large maximum can be useful for comparing payout ceilings. It should never be presented as an expected, typical or achievable session result.
