My Assessment of Perfect Gems
Perfect Gems is a high-volatility cascading slot released by Play’n GO on 30 May 2019. It combines six vertical reels with an additional horizontal reel, dynamically expanding the middle reels to create between 2,304 and 21,609 ways to win.
The main feature is the interaction between Split Symbols, cascading wins and an increasing multiplier. Each consecutive cascade raises the multiplier by one. In the base game it resets when a new paid spin begins, while during Perfect Spins it remains active and can continue increasing across the entire feature.
My rating for Perfect Gems is 4.0 out of 5. The dynamic reel heights make the grid more interesting than a standard cascading slot, and the persistent bonus multiplier gives Perfect Spins genuine progression. The main concerns are high volatility and the wide range of RTP configurations available to operators.

Theme and Presentation
Perfect Gems takes place inside a dimly lit treasure room containing old books, candles, wooden furniture and coloured gemstones. The restrained background keeps attention on the changing reel structure rather than adding unnecessary animation around the grid.
Card ranks from 9 to A form the lower side of the paytable. Red, green, yellow and blue gems provide the premium wins, with the blue gemstone offering the highest regular payout. The symbols use distinct shapes and colours, which helps when the middle reels expand and several cascades occur in succession.
The soundtrack is atmospheric rather than dramatic. Cascades, reel expansions and multiplier increases receive clear audio cues, while Perfect Spins introduce stronger effects to mark additional spins and continuing multiplier growth.
How the Ways to Win Work
Regular wins are formed by landing matching symbols on adjacent reels, beginning with the first reel on the left. A combination normally requires at least three matching symbols, although the highest-paying blue gem can award a win from only two adjacent reels.
Each symbol on one reel can combine with every matching symbol on the next reel. Increasing the height of reels 2 to 5 therefore creates more possible combinations:
- the first and sixth reels always contain three symbol positions;
- reels 2 to 5 can contain between four and seven positions;
- the minimum configuration provides 2,304 ways to win;
- fully expanded middle reels provide 21,609 ways to win.
The displayed number of ways changes with the reel heights. It does not represent 21,609 fixed paylines, and players do not select or activate individual lines.
Horizontal Reel and Split Symbols
The horizontal reel sits above reels 2, 3, 4 and 5. Each position on this reel is linked to the vertical reel directly below it. When the upper symbol matches a symbol on the associated vertical reel, matching icons split and create additional positions.
A split changes one matching symbol into two smaller copies. Several matches can occur on the same reel, allowing its height to grow from four to as many as seven positions. Taller reels increase the number of possible ways but do not guarantee that a winning combination will appear.
The horizontal Wild acts as a universal splitter. When it appears above a reel, it can split all eligible regular symbols on that vertical reel. Perfect Scatters and Spin Scatters are excluded from the split.
This is the defining feature of Perfect Gems. The horizontal reel does not form a conventional seventh payline reel; its main purpose is to control the height and symbol distribution of the middle four reels.
Cascading Wins
Every winning combination activates a cascade. Symbols involved in the payout disappear, the remaining icons move down, and replacements enter the empty positions. The horizontal reel also generates a new result as the cascade develops.
If the new layout produces another win, the process repeats without deducting an additional stake. A sequence ends only when no new winning combination is formed.
Split Symbols and cascades support one another. An expanded reel provides more symbol positions for the current evaluation, while removing winning symbols creates another opportunity for the horizontal reel to produce useful matches.
Increasing Win Multiplier
Every paid spin begins with a 1x win multiplier. Each successful cascade raises it by one:
- the initial win is evaluated at 1x;
- the first additional cascade uses 2x;
- the next consecutive cascade uses 3x;
- the multiplier continues increasing while new wins are formed.
There is no stated upper limit to the multiplier itself. In the base game, however, it resets to 1x as soon as the cascade sequence finishes and a new paid spin begins.
The multiplier applies to the current cascade win rather than retroactively increasing payouts from earlier stages. A long sequence is therefore more valuable because later combinations receive the higher multiplier levels.
Perfect Scatter
Perfect Scatter symbols activate the main Free Spins feature. Three Scatters award nine Perfect Spins, while every additional triggering Scatter adds six more:
| Perfect Scatters | Perfect Spins awarded |
|---|---|
| 3 | 9 |
| 4 | 15 |
| 5 | 21 |
| 6 | 27 |
Perfect Scatters are separate from the Spin Scatters that can appear once the bonus has begun. They are not regular paying gemstones and are not split by the horizontal Wild.
Perfect Spins Feature
Perfect Spins use the same dynamic reel, Split Symbol and cascading mechanics as the base game. The important difference is that the win multiplier no longer resets at the end of each spin.
Every cascade continues to raise the multiplier by one, and the final value carries into the next Perfect Spin. A sequence that ends at 5x allows the following spin to begin with the same 5x multiplier instead of returning to 1x.
The multiplier can only increase during a successful cascade. A spin without a win does not reduce it, but it also does not move the value higher. This creates a clear progression throughout the bonus: early cascades improve the multiplier available for all remaining spins.
If the triggering base-game spin already has an active multiplier, that value can carry into Perfect Spins. The feature therefore begins from the current level rather than automatically resetting the multiplier before the first free round.
Spin Scatters and Additional Spins
Spin Scatters appear during Perfect Spins. Every one that lands immediately adds two spins to the remaining total. Unlike a conventional retrigger, a group of three is not required.
There is no stated limit on the number of extra spins that can be collected. Each additional round provides another opportunity to expand the middle reels, produce cascades and increase the persistent multiplier.
Unlimited retriggers do not mean that the bonus itself is endless. Spin Scatters appear randomly, and the feature ends when the remaining counter reaches zero.
Perfect Gems RTP
The highest published RTP configuration is 96.50%, giving that version a theoretical house edge of 3.50%. Play’n GO also supplies reduced configurations at approximately 94.50%, 91.50%, 87.50% and 84.50%.
The difference is substantial. At the lowest published setting, the theoretical house edge is 15.50%, more than four times the edge of the 96.50% version. The games can appear visually identical, so the RTP must be checked inside the actual game menu.
RTP is calculated across a very large number of rounds and cannot predict an individual session. A high-RTP configuration can still produce a losing session, particularly in a high-volatility game.
Volatility and Maximum Win
Perfect Gems has high volatility. Its largest results rely on several elements working together: expanded middle reels, repeated cascades and a multiplier that has reached a useful level.
The maximum win is capped at 5,000x the total bet. Once the accumulated payout reaches this limit, the round ends and the maximum prize is awarded. There is no progressive jackpot.
The unlimited multiplier and additional Perfect Spins do not remove the 5,000x cap. They provide different mathematical routes toward the same maximum payout.
Mobile Experience
Perfect Gems is built in HTML5 and runs in modern desktop and mobile browsers without a separate application. The interface rearranges itself for portrait and landscape screens, while the dynamic reel heights remain visible throughout the spin.
The horizontal reel and expanded middle reels can make the grid busy on smaller displays. Opening the game in landscape orientation may make multiplier values and individual ways easier to follow.

Is Perfect Gems Worth Playing?
Perfect Gems is suitable for players who want cascading gameplay with more structure than a standard tumble slot. The horizontal reel affects the size of the grid, while every cascade changes both the symbol layout and the current multiplier.
Perfect Spins are the strongest part of the game. Retaining the multiplier between rounds gives early cascades lasting value, and single Spin Scatters can extend the feature without requiring a complete three-symbol retrigger.
The game is less attractive when supplied with one of its lowest RTP settings. Checking the in-game percentage should therefore come before comparing its expanding reels or 5,000x maximum with other slots.
Use the demo to understand how the horizontal reel, Split Symbols and persistent bonus multiplier interact before considering real-money play. Slots involve financial risk and should be treated as paid entertainment rather than a dependable way to make money.
