My Assessment of Gems Bonanza
Gems Bonanza is an 8x8 cluster slot from Pragmatic Play, built around tumbling wins and five colour-coded modifiers. Winning clusters can activate Wild transformations, 2x2 symbol blocks, Colossal Symbols, Lucky Wilds or a complete grid refresh.
In my view, this is one of the developer’s more mechanically ambitious grid games. There are no conventional free spins or Scatter trigger. Instead, a sufficiently long base-game sequence can activate Gold Fever, a progressive five-level feature with guaranteed modifiers and multipliers rising to 10x.

Gemstone Theme and Presentation
The game takes place on an ancient treasure map surrounded by stone structures, gold details and mysterious artefacts. Seven differently coloured gemstones fill the 8x8 grid.
Coloured marks occasionally appear behind the regular symbols. These marks are not prizes by themselves. A winning cluster must cover a marked position before its associated modifier becomes active.
The large grid remains readable because each gemstone has its own shape and colour. Modifiers add stronger animations as blocks, Wilds and Colossal Symbols enter the board, while Gold Fever changes the visual pace more substantially.
How Cluster Pays Work
A regular win requires at least five identical gemstones to connect horizontally or vertically. Diagonal contact does not count.
The cluster value increases with its size. The paytable provides separate prizes for groups of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9–11, 12–14, 15–19, 20–24 and at least 25 matching symbols.
More than one cluster can pay on the same grid. A Wild may also connect with different symbol types and contribute to several winning groups.
Unlike the pays-anywhere system in Sweet Bonanza, matching gems must be physically connected to form a win.
Tumble Feature
After a winning cluster is paid, all participating symbols disappear. The remaining gems fall towards the bottom of the board, and new symbols enter from above.
The refreshed grid is evaluated again. New clusters create additional tumbles without requiring another stake.
The sequence continues until no further winning cluster or Spin Feature can be produced. All awards from the tumbles and modifiers are added together before the paid spin ends.
Every winning symbol removed during the sequence is also counted by the Gold Fever meter. The meter resets to zero when the tumble chain finishes without reaching the required trigger.
Coloured Marks and Spin Features
Special coloured markings can appear behind regular symbols during the base game. A mark becomes active when a winning cluster covers its position.
Each colour corresponds to a different modifier:
- Blue Mark — Nuclear: clears the entire grid after the current tumbles finish and replaces every position with a new symbol.
- Pink Mark — Wild Gem: selects one regular symbol type currently on the grid and transforms every copy into a Wild.
- Brown Mark — Squares: adds random 2x2 blocks containing the same symbol to different positions.
- Red Mark — Colossal Symbol: places one matching-symbol block measuring 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5 onto the grid.
- Green Mark — Lucky Wilds: adds between 5 and 15 Wild symbols in random positions.
Activating a mark does not guarantee a further cluster. The result still depends on the symbol type and position selected by the modifier.
Modifier Order
More than one colour can be activated during the same paid spin. When this happens, the features are played in a fixed order:
- Nuclear
- Wild Gem
- Squares
- Colossal Symbol
- Lucky Wilds
Each modifier can change the grid and generate additional wins or marked positions. This allows one paid spin to develop into a lengthy chain of tumbles and features.
The fixed order is important. Nuclear replaces the board before the remaining modifiers are applied, while Lucky Wilds arrive last and can connect with symbols created by the preceding features.
Wild Gem
Wild symbols do not appear naturally in the standard symbol set. They enter the grid only through the Wild Gem and Lucky Wilds modifiers.
Wild Gem randomly chooses one symbol type that is present after the current tumbles finish. Every copy of that symbol is converted into a Wild.
Wilds substitute for all regular gemstones. The same Wild can contribute to multiple clusters containing different symbol types, which makes its position especially important on the 8x8 board.
Squares and Colossal Symbols
The Squares feature adds one or more 2x2 blocks of matching symbols. Each block counts as four individual symbols and may connect with identical gems already present around it.
The Colossal Symbol feature adds a much larger block measuring 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5. Even the smallest possible Colossal Symbol contains enough connected positions to create a qualifying win by itself.
Adjacent regular symbols of the same type join the block and increase the total cluster size. A well-positioned 5x5 symbol can therefore produce one of the largest paytable groups.
Nuclear and Lucky Wilds
Nuclear removes every symbol from the grid and generates a completely new board. This acts as a free grid refresh within the same paid spin.
The new arrangement can create immediate clusters or provide a different layout for any modifiers still waiting to be played.
Lucky Wilds adds between 5 and 15 Wilds in random positions. These Wilds can join several neighbouring gem types, but their locations are not selected by the player.
Gold Fever Progressive Feature
Gold Fever is triggered by removing at least 114 winning symbols during one base-game spin, including its tumbles and activated modifiers.
The progress meter does not carry over between separate paid spins. If a tumble sequence ends before reaching 114 points, the meter returns to zero.
Gold Fever begins at Level 1 with a 2x win multiplier. At every level, all five Spin Features are guaranteed to play once in their fixed order.
The feature advances only if enough winning symbols are collected during the current level:
| Gold Fever level | Required winning symbols | Win multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Triggered after 114 base-game points | 2x |
| Level 2 | 116 symbols | 4x |
| Level 3 | 120 symbols | 6x |
| Level 4 | 125 symbols | 8x |
| Level 5 | 132 symbols | 10x |
If the required number of symbols is not collected, Gold Fever ends after the current level. The feature also finishes after all five modifiers have been played at Level 5.
Reaching the 10x stage requires a long sequence of successful clusters across every preceding level. It should not be treated as a normal outcome of each Gold Fever trigger.
Bonus Buy
Some versions allow Gold Fever to be purchased directly for 100x the selected stake. The feature then begins without requiring 114 collected symbols in the base game.
The purchase does not guarantee progression beyond Level 1. Each level still needs enough winning symbols to unlock the next multiplier stage.
Bonus Buy availability and RTP depend on the operator and jurisdiction. Both values should be checked inside the game before confirming a purchase.
RTP, Volatility and Maximum Win
The version listed on this page has an RTP of 96.51%. Other certified configurations may use slightly higher or lower percentages.
RTP is a theoretical return calculated across a very large number of rounds. It cannot predict the result of an individual spin or purchased feature.
Gems Bonanza has high volatility. A base spin can end after one small cluster, while a favourable combination of marked positions and modifiers can produce a much longer sequence.
The maximum win displayed on this page is 10,000x the stake. Some operator-specific rule sets use a different payout cap, so the figure shown inside the active game should be verified.
Gems Bonanza vs Gravity Bonanza
| Feature | Gems Bonanza | Gravity Bonanza |
|---|---|---|
| Grid | 8x8 | 7x7 |
| Minimum cluster | 5 connected symbols | 5 connected symbols |
| Main modifier | Five colour-coded features | Black Hole collection |
| Main bonus | Five-level Gold Fever | Free spins |
| Maximum feature multiplier | 10x on all Gold Fever wins | 10x on Gravity Bonus wins |
| Maximum win shown on site | 10,000x | 10,000x |
Gravity Bonanza is easier to explain because it revolves around one collector symbol. Gems Bonanza is more complex, with five interacting modifiers and a bonus that requires separate progression at every level.
Mobile Experience
The HTML5 version runs on desktop, mobile and tablet devices. The 8x8 board fits portrait screens, although the symbols and coloured background marks are smaller than in conventional reel slots.
The interface displays the Gold Fever meter beside the grid and provides access to stake controls, game history and the paytable. Autoplay, Turbo Spin and Bonus Buy may be restricted in some jurisdictions.
Advantages and Drawbacks

- Five modifiers can interact during one paid spin.
- The large 8x8 grid supports substantial clusters.
- Colossal Symbols can occupy up to 5x5 positions.
- Lucky Wilds adds between 5 and 15 Wild symbols.
- Gold Fever guarantees every modifier at each active level.
- The feature multiplier can progress from 2x to 10x.
What Could Be Better
- Gold Fever requires 114 removed symbols during one spin.
- The progress meter resets between paid spins.
- Failure to meet a level threshold ends the bonus.
- Modifier outcomes and positions are random.
- The large grid can look crowded on mobile screens.
- RTP and maximum-win configurations may differ between casinos.
My Gems Bonanza Rating
4.6 out of 5
Final Verdict
Gems Bonanza offers more mechanical depth than its straightforward gemstone theme initially suggests. Colour-coded marks can transform the grid in five different ways, while Gold Fever turns an exceptional base-game sequence into a multi-level bonus.
I consider the interaction between modifiers its strongest feature. Nuclear can reset the board before Squares, Colossal Symbols and Lucky Wilds are applied, allowing one spin to develop through several distinct stages.
My rating for Gems Bonanza is 4.6 out of 5. The complex feature system and 10x Gold Fever multiplier provide substantial potential, but the 114-symbol trigger and demanding level thresholds make the strongest sequences uncommon.
Gems Bonanza should be treated as paid entertainment with a real possibility of losing the full amount staked. More games from the studio are available on the Pragmatic Play page and in the Bonanza slots catalogue.
