My Assessment of Bonanza Megapays
Bonanza Megapays takes the established Bonanza formula and adds a networked progressive jackpot system. The six-reel Megaways grid, dual-direction reactions and unlimited free-spins multiplier remain familiar, while the separate Megapays feature introduces four jackpot levels.
In my view, this version is aimed at players who already enjoy the original game but want an additional jackpot possibility. The progressive prizes give every eligible spin another potential outcome, although they also make the mathematics less transparent than in the standard Bonanza Megaways.

The displayed currency, betting limits and optional controls may differ between casinos. Progressive jackpot values also change as wagers are added to the shared prize pools, so the amounts visible in the game should be treated as current values rather than permanent fixed prizes.
Theme and Presentation
Bonanza Megapays returns to the mountain mine used in the original release. The background features railway tracks, waterfalls, wooden carts and a distant mining settlement, while gemstones and playing-card ranks fill the reels.
The game has been adapted for modern desktop and mobile screens, but it does not attempt to reinvent the visual style. Most of the presentation remains deliberately close to Bonanza Megaways. The clearest addition is the jackpot display, which shows the current Mini, Midi, Major and Mega values above the main game.
The country-style soundtrack and dynamite effects reinforce the mining theme. They provide plenty of energy during reactions, although players familiar with the original will find little that feels new until the Megapays feature begins.
Megaways Grid and Winning Combinations
The game uses six main reels with between two and seven symbols on each reel. The number of symbols changes from spin to spin, producing a different number of ways to win. A fully expanded grid offers 117,649 possible ways.
Winning combinations are created by matching symbols across consecutive reels from left to right, beginning on the first reel. The symbols can occupy any vertical position, so there are no conventional fixed paylines to select.
A larger number of active Megaways creates more possible combinations, but it does not guarantee a payout. The symbols and outcome of every spin are still determined randomly.
Mine Carts and Reactions
A horizontal row of mine carts appears above reels two, three, four and five. Each cart adds another symbol to the reel positioned below it. Wild symbols can also enter through these cart positions.
After a winning combination is evaluated, its symbols disappear in a reaction. New symbols fall into the main grid from above, while replacements move through the carts from the right. If another win forms, the process repeats without requiring an additional wager.
This dual-direction system gives Bonanza Megapays a more dynamic structure than an ordinary cascading slot. A single paid spin can create several wins, but a reaction chain can also finish immediately after its first combination.
Symbols and Wilds
The lower-paying symbols are playing-card ranks, while coloured gemstones provide the higher regular payouts. The diamond is the most valuable standard symbol.
The dynamite Wild substitutes for regular paying symbols but not for Scatters. Wilds are restricted to the mine carts above the central reels, which means their usefulness depends on where they enter the grid and which symbols appear below them.
Four letter Scatters spell the word GOLD. Landing all four letters activates the main free-spins feature. Additional Scatter symbols on the triggering spin award more free spins.
Free Spins and Unlimited Multiplier
Completing GOLD awards 12 free spins. Each additional Scatter appearing on the triggering spin adds five more spins to the starting total.
The bonus begins with a 1x win multiplier. Every successful reaction raises that multiplier by one, and the new value remains active for the rest of the feature. It does not reset when the next free spin starts.
For example, several early reactions can build the multiplier before the more valuable symbols land. This creates the feature’s main potential, but a bonus with few reactions may finish with a relatively low multiplier and a modest return.
Special retrigger symbols can appear in the mine carts during free spins:
- Three Free Spin Scatters award five additional free spins.
- Four Free Spin Scatters award ten additional free spins.
The multiplier has no published upper limit and continues from its current value when additional spins are awarded. However, reaching a very large multiplier requires an unusually long sequence of successful reactions.
How the Megapays Feature Works
The main difference from the original Bonanza is the Megapays jackpot feature. It can activate separately from the regular game and free spins, moving play to a dedicated 6x7 bonus grid.
One of the lower-value symbols is selected as the Megapays symbol. Matching instances remain on the grid while the other positions respin. New respins continue as long as at least one additional selected symbol lands.
Collecting enough Megapays symbols awards one of four progressive jackpots:
- Mini: awarded for collecting 4–7 Megapays symbols.
- Midi: awarded for collecting 8–11 Megapays symbols.
- Major: awarded for collecting 12–14 Megapays symbols.
- Mega: awarded for collecting at least 15 Megapays symbols.
The jackpot amounts are progressive rather than fixed. A portion of qualifying wagers contributes to the prize pools, and each jackpot returns to its starting value after it is won. The amount displayed above the reels is therefore more useful than an old example quoted in a review.
A progressive jackpot should not be interpreted as a likely outcome. The larger prize tiers require more collected symbols and are correspondingly difficult to reach.
RTP, Volatility and Win Potential
Bonanza Megapays has a published RTP of 96.40%. RTP represents the theoretical proportion of stakes returned over a very large number of rounds. It cannot predict the result of an individual spin or playing session.
The slot has high volatility. Regular wins can be uneven, while a meaningful share of the potential is concentrated in reaction chains, free spins and the progressive jackpot feature. That structure may suit players comfortable with substantial balance swings, but it is less appropriate for anyone seeking frequent low-risk payouts.
The regular slot carries a listed maximum win of 17,926x the stake. Progressive Megapays prizes are separate and depend on the current jackpot pools, so they should not be confused with the fixed maximum multiplier shown for the underlying game.
Bonanza Megapays Compared with the Original
The basic reel mechanics are almost identical in both games. Each version offers up to 117,649 ways to win, reacting symbols, mine carts above the central reels and an unlimited multiplier during free spins.
The original Bonanza has a fixed maximum win and a less complicated prize structure. Bonanza Megapays adds four progressive jackpots, but its listed regular-game maximum is lower. The choice therefore comes down to whether the possibility of a shared jackpot is more appealing than the simpler mathematics of the original.
Players looking for a more substantial mechanical change may prefer Bonanza Falls, where the Megadozer feature introduces multiplier Wilds, repeating symbols and bonus coins.
Mobile Experience
Bonanza Megapays uses HTML5 and works on desktop, mobile and tablet devices. The portrait layout keeps the reels readable on smaller screens, while the jackpot values remain visible above the game.
The main controls provide access to the stake selector, paytable and game rules. Autoplay and other optional functions may be restricted depending on the player’s location and the casino offering the game.
Advantages and Drawbacks
What I Like
- Four progressive jackpot levels add another possible route to a large payout.
- The original Megaways and dual-reaction mechanics remain intact.
- The free-spins multiplier increases after every successful reaction.
- Extra spins can be awarded without resetting the multiplier.
- The redesigned interface works well on mobile screens.
What Could Be Better
- The base game differs very little from the original Bonanza.
- High volatility can produce lengthy periods with limited returns.
- The biggest jackpot tiers are exceptionally difficult to collect.
- Progressive prizes make the overall value less straightforward to assess.
- The familiar graphics and soundtrack may feel dated beside newer releases.
My Bonanza Megapays Rating
4.2 out of 5
Final Verdict
Bonanza Megapays is a focused variation of a proven slot rather than a completely new game. It preserves the variable reels, reactions and escalating free-spins multiplier that made the original successful, then places a four-level progressive jackpot system on top.
I think it works best for existing Bonanza players who specifically want jackpot potential. Those primarily interested in Megaways reactions may prefer the cleaner structure and higher fixed maximum of the original game.
My rating for Bonanza Megapays is 4.2 out of 5. The jackpot feature adds genuine scale, but the familiar base game, high volatility and dependence on rare bonus outcomes prevent it from being an automatic upgrade over Bonanza Megaways.
Bonanza Megapays should be treated as paid entertainment with a real risk of losing the full amount staked. More games from the same studio are available on the Big Time Gaming page, while similar releases can be found in the Bonanza slots catalogue.
